1968 911S 2.0 SWB (Sold)

This example from the second year of production was the top of the range 911 producing a very healthy 180 bhp with the upgrade to Weber 40 IDS carburetors. It was immediately very competitive against larger engined Italian super cars and indeed proved to be such an agile and competitive package in any company that it won the Monte Carlo rally in the hands of Vic Elford. This Porsche was the desire of all cool enthusiasts of the time. In fact Mr Cool himself, Steve McQueen owned one, and now today another great style icon, David Beckham owns one as he is a great fan of McQueen.

I myself competed in a similar car in the British Saloon Car championship in 1967 and 1968 only beaten by the enormously powerful Ford Falcon Sprint lightweights specially homologated for the Monte Carlo rally. In 1967/1968 this was a fantastic package and Vic Elford persuaded Porsche Cars GB to use their demonstrator, GVB 911D, for the first Rally Cross at Brands Hatch when the RAC rally was cancelled at the last minute. After this panel bashing event they decided to convert it for the tracks for Elford to race and I bought this very car from Porsche Cars at the end of that season, only to be supported by them on my good results till the end of 1968. (See main Home page photo).

The car I have here is a superb original example from these early exciting years with only 75,000 miles and 3 owners in its life. Supplied new in Italy where it has lived ever since, the last owner (deceased) owning it for 15 years. The Italian Certificate from the Autostorica Club d’Italia states that the car is very original with all original interior and that it was repainted in 2006 in the original ivory white, but that it has not had a full restoration. It presents itself in truly beautiful condition for such a rare early 911S SWB, and the engine still makes that wonderful unique rasping noise that only these powerful air cooled 911s can do.

This car drives superbly and feels so strong that I would be happy to drive it to Italy and back without any qualms. Now UK registered and having a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche AG., this car represents a car for the enthusiastic, collector/investor who also enjoys the driving of such a period icon.
